Why I Created Talk-Tee: A Mum's Story About Communication, Connection, and Clothing That Speaks

Ryan wearing a Talk-Tee

Hi, I'm Shirley, Ryan's mum. And this is the story of how a simple idea on a t-shirt changed everything.

Ryan has Down syndrome. Although he can speak, he's not always understood — so he also communicates non-verbally. Tools like comm-cards, iPads, and AAC devices are incredibly useful, but they're not always practical. They can be left behind, go flat, or simply be out of reach.

Ryan is also incredibly active. He loves the gym and footy training, and on those occasions carrying a device simply isn't an option. He needed something that could keep up with his life, not slow it down.

On more than one occasion, Ryan has been left unable to tell someone he needed the toilet. That's not just inconvenient — it's extremely distressing. As a mum, I spent many hours thinking about what I could do to help. Then my best friend suggested putting something on his shirt. At first I was reluctant — but then I realised it made perfect sense.

Clothing with a real purpose

We wear clothing every day that shows off brands, artwork, or clever slogans — so what if we wore clothing with a real purpose? Clothing that could start a conversation, create a friendship, and provide understanding in a way that is accessible to literally anyone. Sign language is wonderful, but not everyone understands it. Almost everyone, however, can understand an image. That's why Talk-Tee exists.

From one t-shirt to a full communication ecosystem

What started as a simple idea has grown into something much bigger. Today, Talk-Tee includes AAC-Tees, Chat-Caps, Chat-Packs (AAC backpacks), and cozy warmwear — all designed with communication in mind. We also created Scan2Connect, a QR code that can be placed on any clothing, bag, or accessory. When scanned, it opens a personalised webpage all about the wearer — who they are, how they communicate, and links to a free interactive AAC board. Always on, always ready.

For Ryan and everyone like him

If you're non-verbal, a little hard to understand sometimes, or you support someone who is — Talk-Tee was made for you. No batteries. No apps. Just you, your voice, your way.

Let's Talk.
